{"id":541,"date":"2018-11-22T13:52:24","date_gmt":"2018-11-22T13:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.international-airport.eu\/?p=541\/"},"modified":"2018-11-22T15:50:54","modified_gmt":"2018-11-22T15:50:54","slug":"auckland-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.international-airport.eu\/en\/auckland-airport\/","title":{"rendered":"Auckland Airport&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auckland\u00a0International\u00a0Airport\u00a0is the largest and busiest international airport in\u00a0New Zealand\u00a0serving more than 12 million passengers a year.\u00a0Auckland\u00a0InternationalAirport\u00a0is located in Mangere, a western suburb of\u00a0Manukau\u00a0City, 21 km from\u00a0Auckland\u00a0city centre.\u00a0Auckland\u00a0International\u00a0Airport\u00a0is the central hub for Air New\u00a0Zealand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auckland International Airport\u00a0is one of New Zealand\u2019s most important infrastructure assets \u2013 it provides thousands of jobs for the region, is the country\u2019s second-largest cargo port by value, contributes around $14 billion to the economy, and brings over four million visitors to New Zealand each year. Around 70% of international travelers arrive or depart here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of total passenger numbers,\u00a0Auckland\u00a0International\u00a0Airport\u00a0is the fourth largest in Australasia after\u00a0Kingsford\u00a0Smith\u00a0International\u00a0Airport\u00a0(Sydney),\u00a0Melbourne\u00a0Airport and\u00a0Brisbane\u00a0International\u00a0Airport\u00a0(Eagle Farm). However, as both the CEO of\u00a0Auckland International Airport\u00a0and the Prime Minister of New Zealand have recently noted, it is second largest airport in Australasia in terms of high-yield international passengers, being around 50% larger than\u00a0MelbourneAirport.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The site of\u00a0Auckland\u00a0International\u00a0Airport\u00a0was first used as an airfield by the Auckland Aero Club. In 1928, the club leased some land from a dairy farmer to accommodate the club\u2019s three De Havilland Gypsy Moths. The club president noted at the time that the site \u201chas many advantages of vital importance for an aerodrome and training ground. It has good approaches, is well drained and is free from power lines, buildings and fogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1960, work started to transform the site into\u00a0Auckland\u2019s main airport, taking over from Whenuapai in the north-west of the city. Much of the runway is on land reclaimed from the\u00a0Manukau\u00a0Harbor. The first flight to leave was an Air New Zealand DC-8 in November 1965, bound for\u00a0Sydney.\u00a0Auckland\u00a0International\u00a0Airportwas officially opened the following year, with a \u2018grand air pageant\u2019 on Auckland Anniversary weekend \u2013 29 to 31 Januay 1966.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new international terminal, named after Jean Batten, was built in 1977.
