It also supports corporate and general aviation.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Cardiff\u00a0International\u00a0Airport\u00a0is owned by TBI plc, a subsidiary of Abertis\u00a0airports. Cardiff\u00a0Airport\u00a0is the main maintenance base for British Airways\u00a0and home to a variety of aerospace-oriented firms, and therefore a major contributor to the economic development of the region.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Cardiff\u00a0International\u00a0Airport\u00a0attracts around two million passengers a year, according to the UK Civil Aviation Authority and airport statistics. In October 2004, the\u00a0CardiffInternational\u00a0Airport\u00a0was named as one of the top ten best airports in the world, by the Telegraph Travel Awards.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>For 2006, new long haul destinations included Vancouver, Canada; Cancun, Mexico; the Dominican Republic; and Egypt. New European destinations include\u00a0Naples, Galway and\u00a0Lorient. New\u00a0UK\u00a0designations are\u00a0Manchester\u00a0and Newquay.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Cardiff\u00a0International\u00a0Airport\u00a0has been home to a number of independent airlines; most notably during the 1950s through to the early 1990s, with airlines such as Cambrian, Airways International Cymru, Amberair and Inter European Airways, making this Vale of Glamorgan airport their home base.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Cardiff\u00a0International\u00a0Airport\u00a0is located in the\u00a0village\u00a0of\u00a0Rhoose, in the Vale of Glamorgan, approximately twelve miles west of the city of\u00a0Cardiff.\u00a0Cardiff\u00a0Airport\u00a0lies in an area, dubbed by the Welsh Assembly Government as a centre for aviation excellence, with several high-profile aviation companies being located in a small radius. On the airport site British Airways has its major long-haul maintenance facility and\u00a0Barry\u00a0College\u00a0has an avionics and engineering training centre just outside the terminal building.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Rhoose\u00a0Cardiff\u00a0International\u00a0Airport\u00a0railway station opened in June 2005\u00a0on the Vale of Glanmorgan Line\u00a0\u2013 linking Cardiff Central\u00a0with Bridgend. The train station is linked by a local free bus service to the airport from the train station and vice versa. A bus service also links\u00a0Cardiff\u00a0to the airport.
